Isabel’s is a new wine bar opened on Baggot Street in Dublin. The Chef in the kitchen is Niall O’Sullivan and the restaurant itself is the brainchild of Ian Keegan who is also owner of internet company http://www.booze.ie, Take advantage of Ian’s extraordinary knowledge to help guide you through their list, when selecting your wine.
The menu offers more than you would expect from a wine bar and you can choose from items “to graze or to start” (€4/€7.50), a trio of salads (€7/€13), a selection of charcuterie and cheese (€10/€18) and two mains, and a daily fish special (€18/€22).
What sets this menu apart from the start is that so many of the items are prepared in house, the boudin noir, the smoked duck, the excellent fig chutney. The Isabel’s salad with a stunningly presented selection of season vegetables and a butternut and goats cheese custard, was full of incredible flavour. Niall has spent time in Oz and there is a light touch about many of the items which seems to suggest the outdoors. Our party selected one of each of the main courses. The Oxtail and Marrow Gnocchi was declared the winner, with perfectly cooked meat in a delicious rich sauce and deftly executed gnocchi to balance. The fish special on the night was a delicious dish of scallops with Jerusalem artichoke, perfectly cooked sweet scallops on a bed of earthyartichoke puree.
We found room for dessert (well you have to, dont you!) and sampled a salted caramel parfait with chocolate mousse, chocolate soil, blood orange jelly and honeycomb. Delicious, a great combination and the plates were licked clean.
Niall’s use and execution of his ingredients brings something very special to the Dublin dining scene – we loved it and will be back again very soon. Get there if you can quick!
